SCOPE

Tiny House Design & Construction

Every project begins with the same question: how do you want to feel in this space, and who do you hope to become inside it? For Steep Mountain Sanctuary, the answer was presence. A sacred space for creativity, contemplation, and coming home to yourself.

Steep Mountain Sanctuary is a handbuilt tiny home nestled in Pennsylvania's Coal Region, designed and constructed entirely by Patina Design Co's founder. Every beam was set by hand. Every material decision was made with intention. Every detail was considered in relationship to the land it sits on, a dry heath oak forest where the light shifts through the seasons and the trees are always present.

The tall windows facing the forest were not a stylistic choice. They were a spiritual one. Rather than stained glass filtering the sacred, these windows offer something more honest, a direct view into the living forest beyond, a sacred mirror that changes daily. The effect is something between a sanctuary and a treehouse. You are held inside while remaining connected to everything outside. The forest becomes the congregation. The light becomes the liturgy.

Every material in this home carries history. The cabinetry is reclaimed, originally built by the homeowner's great grandfather and brought forward with a coat of Juniper paint that earns its color against the raw timber ceiling above. The encaustic star tile backsplash carries the spirit of the homeowner's travels, objects and influences gathered over a life lived with curiosity and intention finding their way home at last.

A vintage gas range. A brass pendant light. A broom wall that doubles as art. A loft reached by a handbuilt ladder. A meditation cushion on a worn Persian rug where the afternoon light lands just right and a rainbow sometimes comes through the window glass onto the floor.

All windows, exterior sheathing, and insulation were salvaged, honoring the Coal Region tradition of building thoughtfully with what the land and community provide. Nothing in this home announces its values. It lives them quietly in every joint, every finish, every considered choice.

This is what it looks like when a Central Pennsylvania kitchen and bath designer builds for herself. Hands-on construction from foundation to finish, intentional material selection, a deep sense of place and purpose. The same philosophy that guides every Patina Design Co project, just with nowhere to hide.

"The windows were never meant to frame a view. They were meant to dissolve the wall between where you end and where the forest begins."

- ALEX, PATINA DESIGN CO.
